Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Diagnosis and Treatment Center
Screening, diagnosis, and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants, including laser photocoagulation and intravitreal anti-VEGF injections to prevent vision loss.
About this service
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), an abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina of babies born early, is a leading preventable cause of childhood blindness, and Mersin University Hospital operates a dedicated center for its diagnosis and treatment. Preterm infants at risk are screened at defined intervals by ophthalmologists using indirect ophthalmoscopy and digital retinal imaging, so the disease is detected at a stage when it can still be treated effectively. When treatment is required, the center performs laser photocoagulation of the immature retina as well as intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, medications delivered into the eye to halt abnormal vessel growth. Close coordination with the neonatal intensive care unit allows examinations and procedures to be performed safely in fragile newborns, with structured follow-up until the retina has matured fully.
