Gamma Probe

Intraoperative gamma detection that guides surgeons to radioactively labeled tissue in real time, enabling sentinel lymph node biopsy and other radioguided procedures.

About this service

Used in the operating room rather than the imaging suite, the gamma probe is a handheld detector that helps surgeons locate tissue marked with a radioactive tracer. Mersin University Hospital employs this technology most often for sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer and melanoma, where identifying the first lymph node draining a tumor can spare patients more extensive surgery. The probe's audible and numeric signals guide precise, minimally invasive dissection, reducing operative time and tissue disruption. It also supports radioguided localization of small or nonpalpable lesions. This work depends on close coordination between nuclear medicine, surgery, and pathology, giving international patients access to accurate, tissue-sparing cancer surgery aligned with current oncologic standards.
