Radioactive Iodine Therapy
Targeted iodine-131 therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism, delivered on an outpatient basis to selectively destroy overactive or malignant thyroid tissue.
About this service
Radioactive iodine therapy takes advantage of a simple fact of biology: thyroid cells absorb iodine, so radioactive iodine-131 given by mouth concentrates in thyroid tissue and destroys it from within. At Mersin University Hospital, this treatment is offered on an outpatient basis for differentiated thyroid cancer following surgery and for overactive thyroid conditions such as Graves' disease and toxic nodular goiter. Because the radiation acts locally, surrounding organs are largely spared. Nuclear medicine physicians and endocrinologists jointly determine the appropriate dose, review preparation such as dietary and medication adjustments, and provide clear radiation-safety guidance for the days after treatment. The outpatient model lets international patients complete therapy efficiently, with straightforward instructions to follow once they return home.
